“Somebody asked me if I believe in luck, and she doesn’t believe in luck, and I think it’s an interesting conversation. Luck is the hand you’re dealt, and we’re all dealt different hands, and live is the way you play it because you can get a crappy hand and play the heck out of it or you can get a wonderful hand and just misplay it terrible. So many people have wonderful hands that they just don’t do anything with. I got a mixed hand. You can’t sit around feeling sorry for yourself because that’s not gonna do anything” (Gothamist, 2005)
I love this quote. I think that Jeannette really puts life into perspective here. By putting life as a card game, it shows how life will kind of just throw anything at you. Like she says, you might get a good hand or you could get a terrible hand. The real challenge in life is figuring out how to play your cards. Some people play their cards really well and others do not. I can see examples of this in my life as well as in the novel.
Jeannette’s mother is an example of someone who was dealt a tremendous hand but really did not put it to good use. She was born into a very well-off family, and she had the money to support herself and her family but yet she “misplayed” her cards and ended up as a very unproductive member of society. People like Jeannette’s father were dealt a bad hand and did little to improve their lot in life. Rex did not really do much that helped his life at all, he stayed the same all throughout his life. However there are people who know how to play their cards, such as Jeannette and Brian. These two became the most successful in my opinion out of the four children. All the children were dealt lousy hands and I believe they all managed to play them a little bit but Jeannette and Brian really made a productive life for themselves. Brain, becoming a police officer and Jeannette clearly becoming a successful author. They were able to accomplish these things through hard work, perseverance, and playing the heck out of their cards.
